Episode 426: Steve Magness - Win the Inside Game

Steve Mangess came back on HPO to discuss his new book, Win the Inside Game, and other topics. I had the pleasure of reading Steve’s book pre release. Here are some takeaways that I took from the book, along with the podcast recording with Steve.

If I had to summarize the book into three main takeaways they would be:

  1. Fulfillment is not guaranteed from excellence, but continued excellence is often a byproduct of fulfillment. In short, fulfillment is the ingredient for long term excellence.

  2. Human nature drives us to seek success, but can also result in sabotage as a defense mechanism due to insecurities or a fear of failure.

  3. Internal motivators born out of curiosity and a playful approach to new and challenging things is more sustainable than a high stress induced urge to perform.

So what does this mean? It is a challenge as our environments often guide us in a different direction. There is no shortage of environmental factors that steer us towards stress and a fear of failure, increasing the odds of burnout and avoidance. What this ultimately means is we have to take the time to look inward and be honest with ourselves about where true passions and curiosities lie. Just because we have identified with something for years, or even decades, does not mean we are married to it in the way we think. This does not necessitate an abandonment of what we once loved, but rather a mindset shift in how we engage with it. This mindset shift is what can rekindle the love and inward passion to obsess in a healthy way.

Steve Magness is a world-renowned expert on performance. He is the author of the new book, Win the Inside Game, and has also authored, Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and The Surprising Science of Real Toughness. He is the coauthor of Peak Performance. The Passion Paradox, and the author of The Science of Running. For this episode we dive into the topics covered in his latest book.
